visit of Queen Elizabeth will be "wonderful moment"

The visit of Queen Elizabeth next month will be "wonderful moment" in Ireland and the UK Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Owen Patterson said.

In Dublin yesterday after a meeting with the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Eamon Gilmore at Iveagh House, Mr. Patterson said the huge amount of work went into planning the visit.

"I think that the queen will get a great reception from people wherever he goes," Mr. Patterson said.

He added that, although there may be a small number of people who wanted to protest against the visit, he has great confidence in the Garda and the PSNI to deal with protests in tact.

Mr. Gilmore said that the visit was one of the topics to be discussed today at the first formal meeting between him and the Northern Secretary as a change of government. Tánaiste said the visit was welcome reminder of how far the bilateral relationship has come and measure the potential of these relations to develop in the future.

Mr. Gilmore said they also discussed the Northern Ireland and further implementation of the Belfast and St Andrew's agreements, the North-South economic cooperation and the role it could play in rebuilding the economy.

Tánaiste stated that they also discussed the security situation and the recent tragic murder of Constable Ronan Kerr.

Working with the task facing him as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Mr. Gilmore said that he intends to resume cooperation with the European Union.
