Children With Autism Rescued

The biological mother of two autistic children rescued from what police called a prison in their own house is looking for custody of the boys.

Boys' father, John Eckhart, 30, and girlfriend Alayna Higdon, 26, were arrested after police went to her apartment to Vancouver on April 12 on charges of abusing a child and unlawful imprisonment of domestic violence.

The door to the bedroom the boys were replaced by a cabinet-style racks lockable double doors and bolted to the door frame like cells. According to investigators, the room smelled of urine and had scratches on the walls.

Maintenance workers, who alerted police after seeing the appalling conditions in the apartment inspections as said window track was covered in spit of the two boys who were crying at times.

Plywood covered what Eckhart said holes in the wall, and boys aged between six and seven who did not speak. Children shared a small bed, without blankets, bedding or pillows.

During the investigation, two boys with autism were taken into custody by state social workers, along with two other children at home. While in state care, the boys undergo physical and mental evaluation, officials said, and may be enrolled in school for the first time.

Children's biological mother, Ione Bronson, visited the children while they were in custody and said in court Thursday that she would get custody of them.
