Last season, I predicted the Atlanta Falcons would win the Super Bowl.
Obviously I was wrong, but it was not so far away - they were probably the best regular season team in the NFL. Just not the most explosive.
The latest problem came when the Green Bay jumped out to a big advantage in the NFC championship game and Atlanta can not even come close to picking up the return due to lack of explosiveness to do any damage in the second half.
Adding Julio Jones, they have changed that dramatically, and sometimes even in the slow offense Mike Mularky's, the Falcons could put up big numbers, if Jones does what they expect.
It is better, though, because Thomas Dimitroff and Mike Smith had just paid good money for it: the four - count them, four - draft picks in the first four rounds of the 2011 and 2012 NFL Drafts.
Atlanta gave up his first-round pick in 2011 (27 overall), their second-round pick in 2011, their fourth-round pick in 2011, their first round pick in 2012 and their fourth-round pick in 2012. Yes, it is a ton of picks for one player.
And, yes, you can slow clap for Tom Heckert now because he just took a funny catch for the organization of elections - Browns - that the needs in any quantity positions. Now, look, it does not matter, it can work for both sides, and Brown could end up with the last pick in the first round of next year. But it's cool - they will appreciate having a pair of first rounders and appreciate the Falcons win the Super Bowl.
Of course, it's probably a stretch. But the Falcons have to win the NFC South in 2011 if they want to justify this step.
Browns, on the other hand, can sit back and stocks of assets with which to help Colt McCoy and the organization later on down the line, sitting on a pile of early picks for the next two years, and no real guarantee of success in 2011.
And maybe it's too early to try to criticize Dimitroff and Smith. In the end, there really is nothing to justify doing so, they killed him so far. But if something goes wrong in 2011, there will be some questions asked about this deal, especially if Jones can only touch the ball, but so many times per game.
