Fukushima incident caused the largest earthquake ever recorded in Japan, took a turn for the worse on Saturday after an explosion blew the roof of the object.
There is a direct comparison with the 1979 accident at Three Mile Island in the U.S. - in both cases, cooling wine has led to increasing pressure in the radioactive nucleus and led to a relatively small leak of radiation.
Both use the water for temperature control, such as uranium degraded in the nuclear chain reaction in the reactor core, creating steam that drives a turbine to generate electricity.
