In much the same way the U.S. government has nailed the notorious gangster Al Capone - he went to the murder, but was caught for tax fraud - Shankar M Bidari, hoping to put these bookies are away for longer periods of time to evade income taxes. In his letter, Bidari named the top 10 bookmakers, including the notorious and Narahari Fighter Ravi, who were arrested recently and asked the IT department to come down hard on these criminals.
Bidari claims each of the 10 bookmakers mentioned in the list of owned property and other assets of not less than 5 lakh rupees.
Police said the money for these investments came from their illegal betting business. Protecting convicted of tax evasion is probably an easier way, but Bidari can hardly be faulted for taking this route.
Laws against betting weak at best - a maximum penalty of a fine of 500 rupees and imprisonment for six months.
Over the past few weeks, the Central Crime Branch (CCB) sleuths arrested several bookmakers including Shibhu, Benaka, Soni, Mangi Lal, Harish and Akki Pete Babu.
Police seized cash and other materials, such as laptops and mobile phones were found in their possession. Police also busted another betting racket with four brothers and seized Rs 2.79 lakh cash, cars, two wheelers, laptops and 20 mobile phones from them.
But to their chagrin, many of the bookmakers received bail during the day. CCB sleuths say they are investigating leads and say they have enough evidence to prove that the property that these bookmakers have been bought with money derived from their illegal betting business.
Alok Kumar, joint commissioner (crime), said: "Our studies show that these bookmakers have bought a lot of real estate with money obtained through their illegal business. So, we have prepared a list of bookies and our police commissioner sent him to the department of income tax from asked officials to explore these properties and investments and to take action. "
In his letter, Bidari including details of property belonging to this top bookmakers, as well as details pertaining to
Benami properties and other investments made by them in various fields.
Some bookmakers are also links with other countries all over the country, police claim.
