From 405 Freeway set to be closed this weekend, transportation officials have identified several "hot spots" that are expected to be hit hard by the traffic standstill. Times' Dan Wiekel identified some of them:
CANYON ROAD: It's mostly two-lane, north-south canyon roads connecting the San Fernando Valley and West Los Angeles County. Those roads that cross-rich areas such as Bel-Air, can get caught up in the normal movement of the weekend.
These include the Sepulveda Boulevard, Beverly Glen Boulevard, Benedict Canyon Drive, Coldwater Canyon Drive, Laurel Canyon Boulevard and Cahuenga Boulevard. Despite broad public warnings to stay away from this area, members of certain groups canyon neighborhood are afraid of the nightmare side of the traffic - or worse.
Coastal routes: Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu is a tourist magnet and beachgoer on almost any summer weekend. Officials fear that drivers who could close around the corner to the west - particularly those traveling to or from Ventura and Central Coast - can overload the picturesque track.
While Topanga Canyon Boulevard has been appointed an alternate route, officials urge people to avoid the narrow, winding mountain pass that links the Pacific Coast Highway in Ventura Freeway in the west San Fernando Valley.
FREEWAY backups: In the south, Santa Monica officials are preparing for a potential onslaught of circumvention of motorists, in addition to the usual crowds of visitors. Backups, probably about 10 interstate highways and busy city offramps - Cloverfield Boulevard and 4th and 5th streets. Twelve miles east of the closure, Freeway Harbor can also be a mess. It will probably take most of the diverted traffic, and on Saturday more than 100,000 people will participate in a football match between Real Madrid and Los Angeles Galaxy in the LA Coliseum, next to the highway.
