After Dallas' Jason Kidd made one of two free throws, Bryant missed a last gasp three-point attempts.
"Well, we went to the locker room and felt like we gave the game away," Lakers coach Phil Jackson.
"I'm not sure that Dallas is not out to play with us, but the players felt that they gave him."
Bryant finished with 36 points, 21 of them in the second half, but it was not enough to deter determined by the Mavericks in the first meeting of a match between two teams in 23 years.
After the Lakers took a 53-44 half lead, Dallas turned the ball on their first three possessions in the second half as they fell behind 60-44.
But 20.6 scoring run brought them back into contest.
Five Mavericks scored in double figures, with Terry added 15, Tyson Chandler 11 points and nine rebounds and Shawn Marion and Peja Stojakvoic 10 points apiece.
In the game the Lakers host two on Wednesday.
The winner of the series will take on either Memphis or Oklahoma City in the Western Conference finals, with the Grizzlies that a number of leading 1-0.
There was another upset in the Eastern Conference with 34 points, Joe Johnson, Atlanta's leading 103-95 victory over top-seeded Chicago Bulls in the first game of their second round playoff series.
In addition to the defeat on the home court, the Bulls saw MVP candidate Derrick Rose Limp off at the end of the contest after he twisted the ankle in the waning seconds.
"I should be fine," Rose said after he helped from the court.
"I'll probably get treatment right now, go home, get more treatment and be ready to go on Wednesday."
The defeat spoiled the evening when the Bulls said coach Tom Thibodeau was named NBA coach of the year.
Some media also reported Monday that Rose will be declared the MVP.
If this proves true, it would have made him the youngest player to receive the award and only the second Bull with Michael Jordan.
The Bulls led as many as six points in the third quarter to Atlanta engineering 15.2 scoring run spanning the third and fourth quarters.
