After three consecutive years to be on the bubble of NCAA tournament and winding up disappointed in the NIT, Virginia Tech senior Malcolm Delaney hopes Hokies made a pretty strong case for inclusion in a big tournament this year. Tim Abromaitis scored 22 points and Ben Hansbrough 21 to lead Notre Dame to 60-48 victory. After back to 11 points in the first half, Notre Dame used a 13-0 run spanning halftime to turn the 30-24 deficit in the 37 -30 lead. Carlton Scott made a 15-footer from 17:30 left to give Irish 31-30 lead they did not give up.
Pirates (11-17, 5-11) pulled to 44-43 six minutes before the end, but consecutive three pointers to Abromaitis and Scott Martin gave Notre Dame some breathing Hokies room. The led 33-31 at halftime and for most in the first half while scoring leader Malcolm Delaney is not zero, until he hit the idle just 4:39 before the break.
Delaney managed only four shots in the half, and covered the Defense Smith, who also hit 6 of 10 shots and led all scorers with 12 points. Green had 10 for the Hokies.
Blue Devils led only twice in the half, the last at 18-16, but Green's 3-pointer from the right corner started to work 13-4, which gave the Hokies 29-22 advantage, their largest.
