Sri Lanka $23m in debt After world Cup


Sri Lanka Cricket saddled with $ 23 million of debt for cost overruns and the huge bills incurred by the construction of stadiums for the last World Cup.
 
"We spent a lot of money for the World Cup, to build two stadiums and rebuild a stadium. The World Cup has left us a deficit of Rs 2.5 billion," sports minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage reporters.
 
Sri Lanka, which lost the final to India six wickets, took 12 games in the World Cup, with others conducted in India and Bangladesh. "We spent about five billion rupees ($ 45 million) to build three World Cup points", Aluthgamage said.

"We're not in a serious cash crisis", Aluthgamage said. "Building new stadiums cost a lot of money. You have to look at it as an investment in the future development of the game."
 
Sri Lanka Cricket treasurer Sujeewa Rajapakse said Board took 21.5 million dollars loan from the State Bank of Ceylon, and another 3.5 million loan from the International Cricket Council (ICC), to overcome them for the deficit.
 
"We expect $ 25 million from the ICC as soon as possible by hosting rights. Once this happens, we can understand," said Rajapakse.
 
Sri Lanka face England, Australia, Pakistan and South Africa this year, and also due to host Twenty20 World Championships in 2012.
 
Sri Lanka won its only World Cup in 1996 and became a finalist in 2007.
